Soon construction work will begin on a modern museum facility – the Maritime Culture Centre. It will be the next branch of the Polish Maritime Museum. The new building will be built where at present the Colonial Warehouse is located, next to the Crane.

The Colonial Warehouse has now been closed to visitors. It used to be one of the premises of the Polish Maritime Museum, located by the already renovated Crane. Soon the demolition work will begin on the former heating plant which in the 1970s was adapted for the museum.

On 27 September 1785 a strong storm sank a British sailboat carrying iron near Dębki, a fishing village. A message about the sunken ship survived in the local fishermen’s stories. The memories revived whenever yet another net was destroyed by something lying on the sea bottom.

Michał Antoni Leszczyński, better known in the Atlantic region as Michael Lester, had a life as colourful and full of contrasts as his pictures, filled with vivid tropical colours and unbelievable sunshine. Jacek Malczewski has painted only four paintings with the sea as background. One of them has just been purchased by the Polish Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. "Dame Portrait with Sea Background" probably shows Maria Balowa – Malczewski’s "femme fatale".
