For the freedom of sailing
Heroic admirals, fierce wars conducted with Sweden and memorable battles for free sailing on the Baltic Sea are the main topic of our new exhibition entitled "For the freedom of sailing. The Dutch Admiralty fighting for access to the Baltic Sea in the 16th–17th centuries". The exhibition is available in the Granary Hall (Spichlerze) on Ołowianka Island from the 20th of June.
The exhibition presents the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, when the navy and merchant fleet in the Netherlands were at their peak and Poland was the "granary of Europe".
The exhibition commemorates 17th century admirals who contributed to the Netherlands achieving good conditions for its operations on the Baltic Sea, and thus unlimited opportunities for Baltic trade. One part of the exhibition is devoted to the trade with Gdańsk City.
The objects presented at the exhibition are admiral armour, weapons of various types, maritime paintings, objects of everyday use, objects connected with the Western Frisian admiralty and many other interesting historical objects.
