Polish partners in the EU SeaSide project, the CMM and the city of Gdańsk, held a colourful, open-air FESTYN MORSKI event on 20 May, the special guest of which was the Polish sailor Mateusz Kusznierewicz – holding the title of the Ambassador for Maritime Affairs of the City of Gdańsk. Honorary sponsorship of the event was extended by Pomeranian Province President Mieczysław Struk, Pomeranian Province Governor Roman Zaborowski and Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz.
The morning was meant for children and young people. Akademia Przygoda facilitators and CMM Education Department staff had prepared an interesting educational programme, games and quizzes, which took place not only at the Ołowianka waterfront, but also on board Sołdek and Bryza H. Educational staff of the Maritime Museum in Karlskrona (also partners in the SeaSide project) engaged Polish schoolboys and schoolgirls in educational games from the area of marine archaeology, The guests from the Hanse Sail Office in Rostock (project leaders) came with an exhibition of children's artistic output devoted to the cog ship (koga) – mediaeval merchant vessel typical of the Baltic – staged aboard Sołdek. The Baltic Sail and Hanse Sail festivals, the Gdańsk to the Rescue of a Sail Ship project and the Pomorskie in European Union Association had their promotion canopies at the waterfront.
The afternoon was full of attractions, too, like a show of dancing and singing given by young artists of the Pałac Młodzieży in Gdańsk, who were rewarded with small souvenirs handed in to them by Mateusz Kusznierewicz.
The Gdańsk Ambassador for Maritime Affairs also took the winners of the marine knowledge contest organised by the www.trojmiasto.pl portal for a cruise on board the Bryza H.
The main attraction of the afternoon, though, was the "dragon boat" race, in which the crew of the CMM friendly organisations like the National Gallery and the Gdańsk History Museum and the crew of the City Hall in Gdańsk took part. Racing was tight and the final race was more than exciting. Eventually, the City Hall crew came less than a foot clear of the host crew. The winners were presented with a cup and all the competitors with commemorative medals, handed in by CMM Director Jerzy Litwin and Head of Sports and Euro 2012 Department of the City Hall Andrzej Trojanowski. The evening closed with a shantey concert at Ołowianka given by the Trzy Majtki.
This year's European Maritime Day celebrations had been prepared at the CMM as part of EU SeaSide project, which is to promote the South Baltic area.
