Foundation Stone

The foundation stone was laid last Friday (21 May) for the new division of the CMM in Gdańsk at the construction site near the Żuraw.

The ceremony was co-organised by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway to highlight the Polish-Norwegian partnership in the project and to commemorate the adoption of the Norwegian constitution on 17 May 1814.

On the Maritime Culture Centre project CMM director Dr Jerzy Litwin said: "It is the first totally new construction project of the type in Gdańsk". The project would not be possible without the funding from the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism, much of which is provided by Norway.

Mr Enok Nygaard - the Ambassador or the Kingdom of Norway attending the ceremony – stressed in his address the importance of the project for cultural heritage promotion in Poland.

Another participant of the ceremony was Ms Monika Smoleń of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, who expressed her satisfaction at the CMM project. "I do believe the Maritime Culture Centre will become a landmark of Gdańsk, and a piece of modern architecture exquisitely set at the heart of old Gdańsk", the Undersecretary said.

The founding document for the Centre was signed, apart from Ambassador Enok Nygaard and Undersecretary Monika Smoleń, by Pomeranian Province President Mieczysław Struk, Pomeranian Province Deputy Governor Michał Owczarczak and Deputy Mayor of Gdańsk Andrzej Bojanowski.

An ecumenical blessing of the site also took place, performed by Archbishop of Gdańsk Sławoj Leszek Głódź and the Evangelical-Lutheran Bishop of Pomerania and Wielkopolska Michał Warczyński.
