European Maritime Day in Gdańsk

The Polish Maritime Museum in Gdańsk (CMM) and the city of Gdańsk – Polish partners in the EU project SeaSide, the main goal of which is the promotion of the Southern Baltic Area – are preparing two-day celebrations of the European Maritime Day, to be held at the Museum's chief site the Granaries on Ołowianka. On the first day (Wednesday, 19 May 2010) an international seminar Maritime Heritage Afloat will take place, devoted to historical ships and warships. For the second day (Thursday, 20 May), a colourful outdoor fête has been planned named FESTYN MORSKI. The special guest of the event will be the Polish sailor MATEUSZ KUSZNIEREWICZ, the Ambassador for Maritime Affairs for the City of Gdańsk.. The honorary sponsors of the celebrations are Pomeranian Region President Mieczysław Struk, Pomeranian Region Governor Roman Zaborowski and Gdańsk Mayor Paweł Adamowicz.

The morning events of the second day will be addressed to children and young people. Akademia Przygoda facilitators as well as the CMM Education Department staff are preparing an interesting educational programme, games and quizzes. The main attraction of the afternoon will be the "dragon boat" race, in which Gdańsk museums crew will compete with the Gdańsk City Hall crew. The concluding event will be a shantey music concert given by the "Trzy Majtki" band. On 20 May, CMM divisions on both banks of the River Motława will be open to visitors at half the admission fee. Granaries will be open till 6 p.m., the Museum Ship Sołdek till 8 p.m., while boat transfer across the river will be available till 10 p.m.

As part of European Maritime Day celebrations, the 1st stage of a marine knowledge competition will be held at the www.trojmiasto.pl portal, the 2nd and final stage to take place during the fête outside the Granaries on Ołowianka. The prize for the winners will be a cruise with Mateusz Kusznierewicz on board "Bryza H" during the 20th May celebrations, immediately after the results are announced.

The European Maritime Day, founded upon a declaration signed in Strasbourg by the President of the European Parliament, the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Council, is meant to highlight the ecological and economic significance of seas and oceans for EU inhabitants. The celebrations held on this occasion provide an opportunity for the exposition of the paramount role played by seas and oceans in the lives of coastal communities. The European Maritime Day also helps to stress the problems and challenges facing European nations as they seek greater competitiveness and better management of marine resources. The celebrations are also meant to highlight the role of seas and oceans in the culture of modern Europe.
